Being known by other people is not a service that can be delivered.
Definition
Relationship is the network of obligation, affection, and trust through which human life is actually lived.
Why it matters
Almost everything that makes a life good is relational. These bonds are also the practical infrastructure of resilience when work and institutions change.
The challenge AI presents
Machine companionship will be convenient, patient, and available. It can relieve loneliness without producing the mutual obligation that makes relationships formative.

- For individuals
- Choose the harder relationship over the easier simulation, repeatedly.
- For institutions
- Do not use automation to remove every human encounter from care, teaching, and service.
- For leaders
- Protect the meetings, mentorships, and unmeasured conversations that make an organization a community.

- Measure a technology partly by what it does to the density of human ties.
