The Framework
What becomes more important when intelligence becomes abundant?
The Foundations are not a list of skills to keep ahead of machines. They are the dimensions of human life that give a civilization its shape — the things that determine whether extraordinary capability produces an extraordinary society or merely an efficient one.
The framework is a working framework. It will be revised as the evidence, the technology, and the conversation develop.
Worth is the inherent standing of a human being — the claim to dignity that exists before any measurement of output, intelligence, or usefulness.
Artificial intelligence makes many measurable human capabilities reproducible. If worth is confused with capability, the arrival of more capable machines becomes an argument for diminished human standing.
Purpose is the sense that one's effort is aimed at something that matters beyond one's own consumption.
If AI removes much of the work through which people found direction, the vacancy will not be filled automatically. Purpose is not a byproduct of income.
Participation is the ability to affect what happens around you — in work, community, family, and public life.
Automation can quietly convert citizens into recipients. The transfer is efficient and, over time, corrosive.
Wisdom is the capacity to choose well among available possibilities — to weigh consequence, proportion, and human cost.
Fluent, confident machine output can substitute for thinking. The risk is not that machines reason badly, but that people stop practicing.
Relationship is the network of obligation, affection, and trust through which human life is actually lived.
Machine companionship will be convenient, patient, and available. It can relieve loneliness without producing the mutual obligation that makes relationships formative.
Character is the settled disposition to act well — honesty, courage, restraint, responsibility, care.
Systems that optimize for attention, persuasion, and speed exert steady pressure on character, and that pressure is rarely named.
Stewardship is responsibility exercised on behalf of those who come after us — children, communities, institutions, and the natural world.
The pace of capability rewards speed over consequence. Stewardship asks for a longer clock than the market is currently keeping.
