Wisdom
Answers are becoming cheap. Knowing what should be done is not.
Definition
Wisdom is the capacity to choose well among available possibilities — to weigh consequence, proportion, and human cost.
Why it matters
Intelligence answers what can be done. Wisdom answers what should be. As the first becomes cheap, the second becomes the binding constraint on a civilization.
The challenge AI presents
Fluent, confident machine output can substitute for thinking. The risk is not that machines reason badly, but that people stop practicing.
Implications
- For individuals
- Keep doing hard thinking you could delegate. Judgment is maintained by use.
- For institutions
- Schools built to transfer information must become places that form judgment.
- For leaders
- Reward good decisions under uncertainty, not confident answers that were merely available.
- For society
- A society with unlimited intelligence and no wisdom is not safe, however prosperous it becomes.
