Participation
A good future must let people contribute, not merely receive.
Definition
Participation is the ability to affect what happens around you — in work, community, family, and public life.
Why it matters
Human beings need to be needed. Societies that provide for people while excluding them from contribution generate resentment, drift, and political instability, no matter how generous the provision.
The challenge AI presents
Automation can quietly convert citizens into recipients. The transfer is efficient and, over time, corrosive.
Implications
- For individuals
- Find one place where your presence changes an outcome, and protect it.
- For institutions
- Ask which forms of participation an efficiency gain removes, and replace them intentionally.
- For leaders
- Automate tasks; do not automate away belonging.
- For society
- The future must provide more than provision. It must preserve participation.
